5:30pm-8:30pm Owl Prowl & Star Gazing
Join Jackson as he haunts these nighttime hunters in Upper Bidwell Park. We'll meet at the Horseshoe Lake parking lot in Upper Bidwell Park and then begin our prowl into the pine-oak woodlands in search of the diminutive Northern Pygmy-Owl. This species is most active right before sun-rise and in the evenings before it gets dark. We'll listen for its distinctive call, a reward in itself, to help locate this special owl. Bring along a flashlight and binoculars, this is a very tiny owl. We'll then take a moment to view the stars through the large telescopes at the Chico Observatory (weather permitting) located at Horseshoe Lake.

Field Trip Leader: Jackson Shedd was born and raised in Chico. In elementary school, birds and reptiles became a huge interest to him and much of his time was spent looking at photographs and field guides. He was fortunate to visit Papua New Guinea in 1995 in order to see his favorite birds, the Birds of Paradise. Jackson attended CSU, Chico and obtained his BA in Art Studio. Currently Jackson is an avid bird-watcher and President of the Altacal Audubon Society. You can view some of Jackson's paintings of birds on display at the Snow Goose Festival.
7:30pm-9pm Owl Prowl
This family geared field trip offers a unique glimpse into the amazing nocturnal world of owls. Scott Torricelli has been leading the ever-popular Owl Prowls into Bidwell Park for the Chico Creek Nature Center since 1986. The Prowl, consisting of a leisurely hike into Bidwell Park, will start and end at the Chico Creek Nature Center, and will surely leave you with a night to remember.

Field Trip Leader: Scott Toricelli is a well-known popular naturalist and teacher with an intimate knowledge of the Chico area. He was a naturalist at the Yosemite Institute, has coordinated programs for the Chico Creek Nature Center for several years, and has taught environmental education for over twenty-five years.
