Celebrating a Century of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Refuge System

Greg Mensik, Deputy Refuge Manager of the Sacramento NWR Complex, will present a PowerPoint slide show on snow geese that promises to be both educational and entertaining. You'll have an opportunity to browse displays and bird mounts to help you distinguish the characteristics of different types of geese -- lesser snow geese, both blue and white phases and Ross’s geese, for instance. Light hors d'oeuvres and no-host bar. Space is limited to the first 75 reservations.
8:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Owl Prowl (*note: registration for this event is closed)

This field trip offers a unique glimpse into the amazing nocturnal world of owls. The Prowl, consisting of a leisurely hike into Bidwell Park, will start and end at the Chico Creek Nature Center, and will surely leave you with a night to remember. Field Trip Leader: Scott Toricelli is a well-known popular naturalist and teacher who has an intimate knowledge of the Chico area. He was a naturalist at the Yosemite Institute, has coordinated programs for the Chico Creek Nature Center for several years, and has taught environmental education for over twenty-five years.

Saturday, January 25 - Evening Events
4 p.m. - 6 p.m. Meet & Greet author John Cowan

Return to the Masonic Center after your field trip excursions and informative workshops for some casual conversation and an opportunity to meet renowned author John Cowan. He will be on-hand in the lobby to share and discuss his works and to sell and sign copies of his wonderful new book, A Jewel in the Pacific Flyway, The Story of Gray Lodge Wildlife Area. Then, get psyched up for still more interesting pleasures, as the popular sell-out Saturday evening Banquet follows John's book signing.
6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. “Audubon” Banquet
Dinner by Guzzetti's Catering

The always-popular Saturday evening Banquet & Silent Auction returns. Come enjoy live music and an entertaining impersonation of the preeminent 19th century naturalist and painter of birds, John James Audubon.
Actor/writer David Giesen brings the French-born chronicler of America's birds to life in a one-man show that reveals Audubon's eloquence, enthusiasm and struggle to shed light on the wonders of the American wilderness. Audubon (1785-1851) ranks with John Muir and Henry David Thoreau as a spokesman for the spirit of humanity as modeled in the great outdoors.
Chico Masonic Family Center - Cost $24/per person

A slide presentation of many of Audubon's finest paintings and engravings concludes the evening. A special note about another community program that coincides with our glimpse into Audubon’s world: The Chico Museum, 141 Salem Street, is featuring an exhibit of the works of Andrew Jackson Grayson, who has been called the “Audubon of the West”. The exhibit is on display from Dec. 18, 2002 through Feb. 7, 2003. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 12 to 4 p.m. Admission is free, though donations are gladly accepted.
