Description

Leaving Chico in the early afternoon will give us plenty of time to stop and look for geese, swans, and cranes on our way to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. We will arrive at the refuge in time to witness thousands of birds silhouetted against the sunset sky as they leave the refuge in their spectacular 'fly-off'. Dress warmly. Photographers are welcome and encouraged to bring their equipment. This trip is also offered on Friday with a different leader.

Field Trip Leader

Fred Thomas

Fred Thomas grew up locally in the Live Oak area climbing the Sutter Buttes and has always felt at home when they are within sight. After graduating from CSU, Chico with a degree in Agriculture, he farmed for five years before becoming a regional farm seed manager, travelling throughout Northern California for fifteen years. In 1995 he started CERUS Consulting, and over the next twenty years, he specialized in cover crop and California native grass establishment, farm management, pest control advising, and project management on a number of pesticide reduction programs. Project management of the Going Organic Project, which CERUS Consulting spearheaded for the California Certified Organic Farmers Foundation from 2005 - 2010, converted 55 different farms to an organic production track, resulting in over 4,500 acres practicing 'clean water' organic production in the Central Valley and North Coast. Fred has been a regular birder since farming in the mid 1970's, and he is a rock hound and lapidary enthusiast often finding agates, petrified wood, and fossils along the Sacramento River and throughout the wild lands.
