The Maze of Maps

This year we will feature an eclectic assortment of interesting maps from around the North Valley and beyond. Get the bird’s eye view of our local landscape features. Stroll through maps in the CMFC hallway and let your curiosity take you on a tour.

Federal Junior Duck Stamp Display

All 100 California winners from nearly 2,000 entries will be on display. Don’t forget to see the Chico winners.

Meet Smokey Bear and the Blue Goose!

Smokey the Bear and the National Wildlife Refuge’s Blue Goose will be visiting at various times courtesy of the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. Also be sure to visit the US Fish & Wildlife Service fire safety exhibit booth.

Optics Demo

Learn the basics about Binoculars and Spotting Scopes for bird watching! What do the numbers mean? Isn't higher power always better? This will be a "show and tell" discussion about the differences in size, quality, and construction of optics so that you can make a good choice for your needs and budget. Sample optics will be available from numerous manufacturers to illustrate. Marilyn Rose from Out of This World Discount Binoculars will be the presenter.

Junior Naturalist Activities

10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Location: Chico Masonic Family Center

Along with the Live Animal Presentations, Meet Smokey Bear and Blue Goose, Junior Duck Stamp Display, and the Duck Calling Contest, children may earn a Junior Naturalist Certificate by participating in a few activities designed just for children. There will be nature crafts, opportunities to build bird feeders, make a bird call and much, much more!

Volcanoes of Lassen Volcanic National Park

10:30 am - 12:00 pm
Location: Chico Masonic Family Center

This workshop is a great opportunity for educators, adults, and children ages ten and older to learn about some of the world’s most exciting active earth processes. Learn about the unique geologic features of this national park and how to identify the four major types of volcanoes using a variety of fun and creative techniques. Educational props, volcanic rocks, visual display, and other resources will be used to enhance this presentation.

A Photographic Tour of Nearby California State Parks

California has some of the most beautiful state parks in the country and 15 of them are right here in our own backyard. Join state park staff for a personal ‘guided tour’ of the Northern Buttes District State Parks - all from the comfort of your chair. View images from majestic Burney Falls SP to Colusa SRA and many parks in between, including eight parks that are on the closure hit list and what State Parks is doing about it.

Snow Geese of Wrangel Island

Please join us in welcoming renowned Russian biologist, Vasiliy Baranyuk, to the Snow Goose Festival of the Pacific Flyway! Vasiliy is an expert on wildlife of Wrangel Island, including the nesting populations of snow geese that summer there. This unique population of snow geese nests in an interior mountain valley on Wrangel Island, and like Antarctic penguins the flightless young walk an incredible distance (about 75 miles) from the nesting colony to feeding areas near the sea. Vasiliy will share his love of the land & wildlife and the snow geese of Wrangel Island through an amazing lecture complete with videos and photos of this remarkable place and its magnificent inhabitants. Limited seating available.

Children’s Duck Calling Class and Competition

2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Location: Chico Masonic Family Center

Local duck callers will be available for training and coaching before the contest. This is for youth up to 16 years old. Calls will be available for youths.
